Sage is a well known cold and flu fighter, used for supporting the body through tonsillitis, laryngitis, and used as a mouthwash for infected gums and sores in the mouth.
"Sage contains a wide range of valuable and healing volatile oils, flavonoids (including apigenin, diosmetin, and luteolin), and phenolic acids, including rosmarinic acid, found in the herb rosemary. This acid is readily available for absorption in the gastrointestinal tract and from there can reduce the number of inflammatory messaging molecules, thereby helping to reduce inflammation. Additionally, sage contains antioxidant enzymes that combine with the flavonoids and acids, giving it a special ability to stabilize damage to cells from free radicals."
Alcoholic extracts of Salvia have quite a high concentration of thujone which can have toxic effects in large doses.
