Living at Punta Mona has challenged me to work through the constant process of biodegradation of the materials I choose to work with. The jungle reclaims the work, the cycles of transformation and growth speed up by the rapidly changing ecosystem. The Art Lab is an open structure, in the middle of the farm, surrounded by watersheds and exuberant vegetation. Its disposition allows the many animals and insects to share the creative space with me and just like this liminal spaces blend, moss and fungus take over the surfaces, spiders weave their webs inside the studio collecting food for birds who come in and feed on their debris, small lizards run freely as I sat down to weave, dragonflies, butterflies, and other critters inhabit the creative space I hold so dearly. The ideas of progress shift away as they turn into experience, soon the new found stitch dissolves and the only left thing is the memory of its discovery recorded in my body and maybe in a photograph. Experience finds its heartbeat through sharing. Sharing the knowledge that my body holds, allowing my hands to speak the material’s language… soon your hands pick up on it allowing our bodies to become receptacles, allowing a mycelium like network to grow, branching out, absorbing the nutrients for environmental thoughts, germinating seeds for cultural reframe.
